Choosing a camera
Choosing a camera
On this page you can read bout some factors to consider when choosing a camera
and also find cameras I have ever used as well as those I could recommend.
The basic elements that make a good camera are ISO (camera’s sensitivity to light), aperture (camera’s exposure to light, F value range) and the size of the sensor. Also a wide range of shutter speed levels helps capture movements without causing blur and capture quality images in the dark light conditions (high speed shutter), as well as the traces of moving subjects (slow shutter).

When the ISO value is small, the camera absorbs less light and the camera produces sharp images. So, with the low ISO value you can enjoy the effect of tracing movement of the light (i.e. stretched lights of the traffic or stars - see the 1st photo above ) with good image quality. Also it works when the sunlight is bright in the midday or early afternoon (see the 2nd photo above), as the low ISO controls the intake of the light. With the high ISO value a camera absorbs much light but compromises the image quality, resulting in noise and discoloration but you can photograph with high shutter speed in the low light. The good quality of the sensor and noise-reduction better the image quality even with the high ISO value.
Aperture (F value) decides the depth of the image (when the subject is close, shallow (2nd photo), and when the subject is in distance, deep (4th photo)) by either opening wider or closing narrower the opening of the lens. And if the range of F value is wide, you can enjoy different effects when you want to close up a nearby object and blur the background (with low F value - see the background of 2nd photo) and when you want to realize radiated rays of sunshine (with high F value - see the 3rd photo). The good sensor quality also gives an impact on photography with high F value.
Sensor size
The sensor size is important when choosing a camera as it can improve the image quality particularly when the amount of the light intake to the camera is small (i.e. high ISO value and high F value, night, caves, cathedrals etc). With a great sensor you can take clear photos at night or in the dark indoor with lower risk of motion blur and in some cases you might not need tripods (see the 5th photo). The sensor quality is relevant to the price of the cameras.
Shutter speed
Shutter speed means how long it takes to absorb the amount of the light into the camera and also relates to depiction of the moving subjects. High shutter speed captures events (i.e. wild life and performance movements of athletes) happening in a shorter period of time to appear still in the image. Slow shutter speed depicts traces of movements i.e. automobile lights, star movements, flow of water, northern lights etc.
Resolution
Resolution decides the number of dots in an image, sharpness of the photo and how much the details are displayed there. If you want to print the photos or publish them then, resolution is vital. Image size is measured with megapixel. If this aspects of quality of camera matters then you can check "Max resolution" to choose the camera with the large value (5000X3000 or more). But resolution also represents the size of the images. If the resolution is high (and the size of the image is large) you might experience some difficulty in electronically transmitting the images. I would not recommend expending the image size to make the photos clearer (i.e. 2200 X 1700 to 5000 X 3000 ). That will cause some problems with the image quality.
So, first three (ISO, aperture and sensor size) pretty much decides the performance of the camera, and makes it possible to take good quality photos in good or poor light conditions. If you aspire to produce professional quality photographs and see your photographs as works or/and would like to realize a wide range of photographic styles then the shutter speed range and image size would matter.
Physical size and weight of camera
These two elements are perhaps important to many of the users that use camera outdoors or at least need to carry it.
Nikon Coolpix W150
This is a compact camera is not only easy and fan to use for both adults and children but also has waterproof performance of up to the depth of 10 m and shock resistance for the drop from the height of 1.8 m. And it can fit into a handbag. The use can enjoy applying various effects after shooting. Built-in Wi-Fi and bluetooth.
Max resolution: 4160 x 3120.
F/3.3-5.9, ISO: 125-1600, Monitor 6.7 cm (2.7-in.)
The F value range and ISO are not too large.
Max shutter speed: 1/2000 sec
Physical Size: 110 x 67 x 38 mm (4.33 x 2.64 x 1.5″) Weight: 177 g (0.39 lb / 6.24 oz)
Price: Approx. 200 USD to 260 USD
When the light conditions are good it works fine. It has a bit of short coming in agility, taking a little of time in focusing. The size of the sensor is at the level of mobile phone (4.7 x 3.5 mm/1/3”).
Recommend for entry level photographer wishing to use a camera outdoors for casual entertainment purposes.
A compact camera with unusually high image quality and full of user friendly functionalities
Fujifilm X100V
This camera has an outstanding top quality for a compact camera which produce great performance in both low light and high light. It is particularly good for portrait photos as it captures skin tones very well. It is user-friendly and allows users to take intended photos quickly thanks to its improved auto-focus speed and dedicated dials for shutter speed combined with ISO, aperture and exposure compensation. Also it is easy to access settings with Q menu.
Max resolution: 6240 x 4160
F2 - F16, ISO 160-12800
Sensor size: 23.6 x 15.6 mm

Weather resistance (not to take in the water but just to take photos in rain)
Price: 1,400 to 1700 USD
The price is high, around 1500 USD (you might be able to purchase some SRL camera )
In fact Cannon EOS M (sensor size 22.3 x 14.9 mm, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200, 6400, 12800, shutter speed: 1/4000 sec to 60 sec) is cheaper
Though the lens is built-in adding conversion lens will expand its capability of the expression.
Entry level camera for outdoors recreations
Olympus PEN E-PL9
A stylish mirrorless camera with excellent image quality and value for money
This camera is suitable for a wide variety of users from entry users to intermediate users. And the quality of the image is good enough for upgrading your photography from a compact camera like Nikon Coolpix.
The significance of this camera is light weight and compact but still being a DSLR camera(Digital single-lens reflex camera). Also as you see its fancy outook attracts female users as well. With its simplified inner structure, despite the compact body and easy-to-use mechanism, it can produce the high level images for serious photographers when the light conditions are good. You can expect image quality close to SRL camera as quality improvement has been done for this version.
Effective pixel count: 16.1 Megapixels Max resolution: 4608 x 3456 ISO: Auto, 200-6400 (expandable to 100-25600) Screen dots: 1,040,000 F values
Size: 117 x 68 x 39 mm (4.61 x 2.68 x 1.54″) Weight: 380 g (0.84 lb / 13.40 oz)
Price: 410USD to 720USD
This camera is reasonably priced (1000USD cheaper than the Fujifilm X100V) and at the same time the produces high quality images (professional quality) under good light conditions while easy to use. I would expect much for the image quality as an owner of the older version of this camera.

OM-D E-M1 Mark II
A high-end model of Olympus. As an owner of this model the good points are excellent image quality not just realistic but liveliness, powerful performance in the dark scenes including night sky, and lightweight for SRL cameras which allows you to take it to mountain climbing. The shortcoming is the price and short battery life (you will need at least two batteries for a day trip). And like other SRL cameras if you use it after using user-friendly cameras as shown above, it takes a while to learn about its' functions. In my experience this camera is vulnerable to motion blur and take a while to get used to. So, I would recommend you to practice using it before leave for a photography trip and prepare tripods. I don't regret having bought this camera because of its excellent image quality and toughness (withstands rain, dirt and impact).
Effective pixel count: 20.40 Megapixels Max resolution: 5184 x 3888 ISO: 200-25600 (expands down to 64) F values 2.8 - 20 Screen dots: Sensor size: Four Thirds (17.3 x 13 mm)
Size: 134 x 91 x 67 mm (5.28 x 3.58 x 2.64″) Weight: 574 g (1.27 lb / 20.25 oz)
Price: 1500 to 2000USD with lens, 550USD to 800USD without lens (you might find a bargain price looking further)
What I am aware of this camera as an owner is outstanding image quality which none of the cameras listed above match. And even if you increase the F value in poor light conditions still it maintains the sharpness of the image. That means you do not need tripods when other cameras require them, allowing freedom in composition and mobility. Also this camera has tons of functionalities. So it is for a true camera manias or professionals.
